EMF SR 4: Engineering-Economic Modeling: Energy Systems

Special Report

Abstract:

This special issue surveys different modeling techniques for energy forecasting, planning, and decision-making. It is one of two related special issues of Energy on this subject. The survey is not problem — but methodology — oriented i.e., it does not explicitly address problems of energy planning or policy, but identifies methods that have proven useful in addressing these issues. Some fundamental problems encountered in applying quantitative methods to policy analysis, including defining objectives and insuring model credibility, are addressed in the first part of this volume. This is followed by a review of forecasting methods, including econometric, process engineering, and hybrid approaches. The final part of this volume deals with the theory and practice of modeling energy-economy interactions, with the linkage of energy sector and economy wide models at various levels being the main tool for most practical applications.
